dc.description.abstract | Currently, the Metropolitan Waterworks Authority (MWA) currently suffers from up to 30% water loss. One of the sources of this loss is the inaccuracy of large meters that are installed in low-flow areas. This research initiative thus proposed a method to mitigate the loss by installing compound meters. These meters are capable of more accurate readings under a wider range of flow rates. The proposed prototypes were assembled from a large (2”) meter and a small (1/2” or ¾”) meter along with a check valve to direct the water flow through the meters based on flow rate. The prototypes were tested at the MWA testing facility and found to be sufficiently accurate with an exception of flow rate close to the valve-opening rate. Finally, the prototypes were installed in actual locations and found that the readings increased between 0.5% - 31%. The results confirmed that the proposed compound meters should receive continued development and could eventually replace large meters that are currently installed. | th |
