The entitled “The Roles of Women and their Participation in People’s Politics” aims at understanding the participation of Thai women in people’s politics which comprises diverse dimensions. The research explores the levels of engagement in participating in various actions using different means and strategies in order to secure social change. Additionally, motivation, enabling and disabling factors to women’s participation in people’s politics are examined. The researchers conducted the research using mixed-methodology. For the quantitative method, questionnaires were used as instruments to investigate the level of participation and engagement of the research participants in various dimensions, the approaches and methods of participation, as well as factors that are both conducive and/or obstructive to their participation in people’s politics. Descriptive and analytic statistics employed were frequency, percentage, mean, weighted mean, standard deviation, t-test, and One-Way Anova. For the qualitative method, semi-structured as well as focus group discussion were used as techniques in data collection along with video documentation on life stories of a number of participants, so as to gain multiple perspectives of women participants and their lives pertaining to their engagement in people’s politics. Data analysis and interpretation yield a number of key findings concerning the level of engagement of women who participated in the study. The levels of engagement are found in 8 dimensions of people’s politics: social welfare, community and locality development, education & culture, environment, economics, law, mass media, and direct people’s politics respectively. However, findings suggest that the levels, characteristics as well as the means and strategies of engagement vary among participants from different regions of the country. In terms of motivation for political engagement, findings indicate that the majority of women participate in people’s politics due to the direct experience of injustice. Their struggles against distorted development manifest in the form of social action and social movement to protect their rights. Many participants take part in the mobilization of alternative development thinking and practice to address victimization of structural violence such as poverty and housing insecurity, the encroachment of corporations and capitalist investment on natural resource and discrimination faced by ethnic minorities. Partnership with academic institutions in light of knowledge generation is found to be one of the strategies women participants use in getting their goals achieved. |
